James Varney

Lead Artist
We Live Here
United Kingdom

James Varney is a Manchester-based writer and theatre maker, making work about cities with and for the people who live in them. He has been commissioned by the Royal Exchange, Manchester International Festival, and Manchester Literature Festival, and regularly collaborates with The Writing Squad on projects. He is delivering his participatory project 'We Live Here' in Hulme, Manchester, in partnership with The Hallé Orchestra, Contact Theatre, and Writerz N Scribez. We Live Here is a community arts project founded in response to Hulme's ongoing struggle to assert its identity against developmental and planning decisions which take place without consultation with Hulme residents. James finds other people far more interesting than himself and through artistic collaboration and community-engaged practice uses writing, drawing, and theatre to imagine the world we want to live in
