On graduating from Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School, Tanea worked at Taki Rua Productions as one half of the programming team (with Hone Kouka) and began her journey as a Māori theatre producer.

She has broadened on those producing experiences by delivering an array of cross cultural/multi-disciplinary art projects such as the Venice Biennale, Frankfurt Book Fair and the Festival of Pacific Arts in Guahan.

Tanea is the producer of Hāpai Productions, a mana wahine Māori company she and Nancy Brunning set up in 2013. The kaupapa of Hāpai Productions is to uphold tikanga, mana and the pursuit of mātauranga through the creation of Māori theatre. Productions include Witi’s Wahine and Pakaru.

Tanea is currently Tumuaki at Te Kura Toi Whakaari in Pōneke, a position she has held for the past seven years. She continues her acting career in television, films and theatre. She is an artist Trustee on The Arts Foundation NZ – Te Tumu Toi.

Tanea was the 2020 recipient of the Creative New Zealand Ngā Tohu Hautūtanga Auaha Toi Making a Difference Award and was conferred as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year Honours List 2022.
